Concrete, 4-channel live-processed sound, Missouri
Channels (Tunneling Home) is a feedback system that generates musical compositions from sounds captured from inside the well. At the base of each well form sits a concrete parabolic sound reflector that bounces sound waves to microphones positioned above the wells’ apertures. The sounds captured from one well resonate from the speakers above the other. In this iteration, the voice of the artist’s mother singing Chinese lullabies from her childhood resonates from within a single well as a performance of eulogy to my late grandfather. The wells are tuned to harmonize with her mother's voice, and new compositions are generated by the feedback system between the two wells until eventually, when the space falls silent, and another lullaby begins.
